Ban Asbestos

Canada must take responsibility for the impact of its long-held promotion of asbestos in Canada and abroad. We work in collaboration with Ban Asbestos Canada (BAC), a coalition of labour, public health, environmental and human rights groups, academic and scientific experts, concerned citizens, victims and their families, to advocate for a ban on asbestos in this country. In December 2016, the federal government announced a comprehensive ban on asbestos and asbestos containing products by 2018. CELA continues to seek a global listing of all asbestos (including chrysotile) under the Rotterdam Convention and other UN Conventions and Programs aimed at controlling the international trade in hazardous substances.
