CELA Available for Comment in Response to Proposal for New Nuclear Liability Law

Jun 10 2013

Toronto - Theresa McClenaghan, Executive Director and Counsel with the Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) is available for comment to media on the background of nuclear liability in Canada following remarks scheduled today by the Natural Resources Minister concerning Canada's Nuclear Liability Act.

A federal government media advisory indicates the Minister will make remarks on nuclear liability this morning at the Canadian Nuclear Society conference. (See http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/reminder-media-advisory-minister-oliver-make-important-announcement-concerning-canadas-1799666.htm)

CELA and Greenpeace issued a Petition to the federal Commissioner for Sustainability this past April 2013 in respect of the federal government's discussion paper on potential legislation for nuclear liability which was shared only with the industry and asking for public consultation. See the petition here: http://www.cela.ca/publications/petition-auditor-general-application-polluter-pays-to-principle-nuclear-industry

We still are awaiting a response to that Petition.
