Safe Drinking Water Law Introduced in Ontario, Environmentalists Call Upon Government for Quick Passage

Jun 15 2000

Environmentalists applauded news that M.P.P. Marilyn Churley is today introducing a private member's bill which would establish a Safe Drinking Water Act in Ontario."We have advocated safe drinking water legislation since the early 1980s," said Richard Lindgren, staff lawyer with the Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA). "If enacted, Ms. Churley's bill will go a long way in protecting drinking water quality in this province."At the present time, Ontario has no law that is specifically designed to protect drinking water quality, particularly at the point of consumption."Recent events have clearly demonstrated the need for safe drinking water legislation," noted Paul Muldoon, Executive Director at CELA. "We call upon all parties in the Ontario Legislature to cooperate and pass this long overdue law as soon as possible." -30-For more information:Richard Lindgren 613-385-1686Paul Muldoon 416-960-2284
