Environmental Groups Objections Highlight Need for New Pesticide Law

Apr 11 2001

The Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) and World Wildlife Fund Canada today filed a Notice of Objection under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act with Environment Minister David Anderson. The groups are opposing a proposal to deem the Pest Control Product Act and its Regulations to be "equivalent" to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act with respect to notice and assessment requirements for new substances. The Notice of Objection was sent to Environment Minister David Anderson and copied to Health Minister Allan Rock. It details the numerous areas where the content of the federal pesticide law (written in 1969 and not amended since) and its regulations cannot be deemed "equivalent" to the more rigorous requirements of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, as revised in 1999.- 30 -For more information contact: CELA 416-960-2284Paul Muldoon, Executive Director and Counsel, ext. 219 Theresa McClenaghan, Counsel, ext. 218
