May 06 1998

In an open letter to Lloyd Axworthy today, the Canadian Environmental Law Association called on the federal government to place an immediate moratorium on water exports from the Great Lakes. CELA also called on the federal government to immediately begin, with Great Lakes Basin jurisdictions (federal, state and provincial), negotiation of a regional treaty on the sustainable management of the Great Lakes ecosystem. CELA will also be calling upon Ontario Environment Minister Norm Sterling to immediately cancel the permit to take water from Lake Superior for export to Asia and to introduce legislation to ban water exports.- 30 -For more information:Sarah Miller, Coordinator, Canadian Environmental Law Association, 416-960-2284
