Crucial Time for Public Comment on Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement

The next few months will determine the long term future of the Great Lakes as the governments finalize the renegotiated version of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. This new Agreement has been under consideration since 1995.

Will the new modernized Agreement anticipate and prevent new damage to the ecosystem while restoring degraded functions?

Will governments commit resources to the necessary programs to protect the largest freshwater basin in the world?

CELA has been working with Canadian and US Great Lakes advocates and members of Great Lakes United to achieve these goals. There will be one last chance to influence the fate of the Agreement.

In late August the governments will post a consultation presentation on

Binational public fora will be held in Toronto on the afternoon of Thursday, September 8th and in Chicago on the morning of Tuesday, September 13th.

A basin-wide webinar will be held on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 13.

The deadline for written comment from the public is September 20.
