Take Action Now for Drinking Water Source Protection!

Nov 04 2005

The Ontario government is preparing new source water protection legislation. Expected by the end of 2005, CELA is very encouraged by this initiative. But, we are also concerned that several key areas may not be adequately addressed. In particular, there may be insufficient funding for this far-reaching initiative. Sustainable and reliable funding for the implementation of source water protection is essential.  On October 21, 2005, CELA and seventeen other public interest environmental organizations in Ontario submitted a comprehensive letter to Environment Minister Laurel Broten and copied to the Premier and eight additional provincial Ministers expressing these and other concerns. The letter is linked below. In order for source protection to be a success in Ontario, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Now is the critical time for contacting municipal leaders, MPPs, and Premier Dalton McGuinty. Use the Green Ontario website to obtain provincial and municipal contact information. Emphasize the importance to Ontario of a widely-protective, well-funded source water protection framework.  It is particularly important for municipalities to voice their enthusiasm and willingness to engage as active participants in the implementation process.  Your continuing support is greatly appreciated! For more information:At CELA: 416-960-2284Theresa McClenaghan, Counsel, ext 218 mcclenaghan @ execulink.comJessica Ginsburg, Special Projects Counsel, ext 226 jginsburg @ cela.ca
