About CELA: Established in 1970, the Canadian Environmental Law Association is a Specialty Clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario, providing services to clients across Ontario, with a province-wide mandate. CELA works to protect human health and our environment by seeking justice for those harmed by pollution and by working to change policies to prevent such problems in the first place. As a Legal Aid Clinic, our top priority is to represent low income individuals and communities and to speak out for those with less influence and who receive less of a say in decision-making.

CELA’s services include direct client representation, test case litigation, law reform, public legal education and community development. CELA’s current priorities include (i) access to environmental justice, and (ii) pollution prevention and public health and safety.

Responsibilities: General duties will include providing summary advice and brief legal services, involvement with our legal team in CELA’s northern cases, public legal education, client intake, and outreach in CELA’s client communities in northern Ontario. There will be close collaboration with other CELA staff in the conduct of the work. The position will be based in northern Ontario. Travel is anticipated as part of this position, and will include travel to and among communities in northern Ontario and occasionally to the CELA offices in Toronto.

Required Skills and Experience:
• Must be a member of the Law Society of Ontario, qualified and in good standing to practice law in Ontario by September 2018
• Must be willing to practice in and travel to communities across northern Ontario
• Demonstrated connection to and interest in northern Ontario an asset
